Eternal Pleasures

There are many different pleasures in this world. Most of us live for Friday. We take pleasure in the weekends because we are usually with people that we love. We have time to relax and enjoy life. I take pleasure in watching my kids play together and enjoy each other. Most of the time they don't even need their toys to have fun. I take pleasure in spending time with Scott. We love date night! We go out several times a month, just to hang out together. We love vacations and "getting away". We love being outside and breathing the fresh air. I take pleasure in a good cup of hot chocolate and a good book. I could go on and on. God created us to enjoy life and each other. There are pleasures that lead us far from God and those that cause us to rejoice in His goodness. Psalm 16:9-11 says, "Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand." Pleasures that are eternal - that last forever, center around the Lord and His presence in our lives. Right before these verses David states "the sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods." Those running after anything but the Lord will increase in their sorrows. Their pleasures will fade away. They are empty pleasures. Today I'm asking myself - what pleasures am I running after? Are they pleasures that will last? What are the pleasures taking me away from God? Have I, as verse 8 says, "Set the Lord always before me"?
