Missing the Promised Land

What a sad moment it must have been when Moses, the only one who has seen God face to face, stood on the mountain and looked into the promised land, knowing he'd never enter. He had rescued the Israelites from Egypt, put up with their moaning and groaning, wandered around with them for 40 years, lead them faithfully and now he wasn't going to enter into the land that had been his goal from the beginning. I wonder what went through his mind as looked at the promise from afar? Perhaps he was remembering the day that he hit the rock out of anger. Perhaps he was regretting his anger at the stubborn, spoiled people. How many times did he wish he had a "do-over" and he could go back and speak to the rock and show the people the glory of God? This is a man that Dueteronomy says there hasn't been another prophet like him since. One moment in time, one strike of the rock, one angry explosion and God took the promised land from him. This leads me to - how can I, not a prophet, not having seen the face of God, not having been inspired to write books of the Bible, how can I be so careless with my words and my actions? Perhaps I am going to miss out on a promise because I am not careful to show my kids the glory of God. I know that God forgives and I'm sure He forgave Moses but nowhere does the Bible say that He'll wipe away the consequences of our actions. Plan B? Joshua - a mighty man of faith that God raised up. Interestingly enough - he also wandered around with the whiny people for 40 yrs before he took over as their leader. God wasn't dependent on Moses, or Joshua or any of them - just like He's not dependent on me. I am fully dependent on Him. Moses was fully dependent on Him. Our pastor talked about "give us this day our daily bread" on Sunday and he pointed out that perhaps God put this in the Lord's prayer to remind us that no matter how much wealth we accumulate or don't accumulate - our daily bread comes from Him! We are to be totally dependent on God.
